Materials needed for the Log Cabin Quilt Pattern:

- 3/4 yard of White / Color A (if 44" width) - Flannel or Quilting Cotton
- 1/4 yard of Red / Color B (if 44" width) - Flannel or Quilting Cotton
- Matching thread
- Scrap Fat Quarter quilting fabric or Scrap Muslin to back the pillow. (22.5"x22.5")

1. Cutting instructions
Skip this section if you are using our Pillow Kit.
- FIRST Cut a single 8.5" x 8.5" square in RED (Color B)
- Cut 2 strips using the remaining RED (Color B) Fabric at 3 3/8" width.
- Cut a single Back Panel 22 1/2" x 19 3/4 " in White.
- Cut 3 width of fabric strips in WHITE (Color A) of 3 3/8 "
We recommend not sub cutting this pillow, since its easier to just cut the strips as you go. But if you are the type who likes to sub cut we've provided a chart of the sub cuts to make.

2. Start Assembly
Line up the White strip with the Red square edge. Then trim length to match. OR Line up a edge of piece A, with the long edge of one of the B pieces.
Pin together so they don’t move.
Hand sewn: draw line 1/4” from the top of the pinned edge, lightly using a pencil or washable marker. Hand stitch using back stiches on the line across the top. Knot the final stich.
Machine: Line the edge of the fabric up with the quarter inch mark on your machine. Sew a straight line. Backstitching at the beginning and the end. Recommend 2-2.5 stitch length on most machines.
Repeat on the opposite side with the other B piece.
Press both flaps out using an iron. or by finger pressing the sides down.
You can press open the seams, or press them to one side.
3. Attach Opposite side
Line up your white strip and trim to size, OR Find piece C
With the front (or right side) of the quilt piece and the front of piece C together. Attach piece C using the same method you attached A&B with.
Repeat on the opposite side.
Then press the flaps out and flat.

4. Attach the Red pieces
Trim red pieces to size. Line up piece D, sew together, then line up your second piece D on the other side, sew together. Iron flat.
Line up piece E. Sew. Then repeat on the other side. Iron flat.
5. Cut your Log Cabin block into quarters
Using your measuring tape, find the halfway point going vertical and horizontal across your quilt block. It should be between 9.75 and 10 inches at the halfway point.
Cut along the markings. Creating 4 equal quadrants.
6. Attach the small middle white strips.
Trim your white strip to line up the the edge of your block. OR Line piece F with the edge of one of the quilt blocks.
Sew together. Press flat.
Line up your 2nd quilt block piece. With the right sides together, sew together.
Repeat with remaining quilt blocks and piece F.
7. Attach the middle piece to the mini Log Cabin Blocks
Sew piece G to the block, with right sides together.
Press open.
Sew your second block to the block with piece G attached, with right sides together.
Press open.
Press the block nice and flat.
Congratulations you’ve made the quilt block!
8. Quilting the Log Cabin Quilt Pattern Pillow Top
Start by laying the quilt top face up on the muslin or scrap quilting cotton. (Wrong side touching the muslin fabric).
Pin together using safety pins or your glass head pins. Making sure to go through both layers when pinning.
Helpful hint: Its okay to use the glass head pins since this pillow is small. But typically you want safety pins on a larger quilt. |
9. Quilt the top.
Stitch through both layers. Start with the lines going through the middle to keep the backing secure.
If you are hand sewing. Using a running stitch, back stitching your first few stitches and your last few stitches. Mark light lines if needed to stay straight when stitching.
If machine quilting use a straight stitch. Back stitching at the beginning and end. Recommend 2-3 stitch length on most machines.
Trim any muslin that overhangs the front off.
10. Create the back panel
Your kit will also include 2 back panel pieces, trim the white strip to 22.5 in length, And a zipper.
Using a washable market or pencil. Mark a line at 1” inside the fabric, on the back panel, and remaining strip of white fabric.
Lay the zipper with the front touching the front of the fabric (right sides together). The zipper back should be facing you. Line up the beginning of the teeth with the 1” marker, so that the flaps go past the 1" mark.. Pin or baste in the seam allowance.
Sew close to the invisible zipper teeth. Starting and stopping at your 1 inch mark.
Unzip or zip the zipper to move the zipper out of the way when you are sewing.
Repeat on the back panel.
11. Sew the gap together.
Now you need to sew the 1” gap on each end.
Fold right sides together. Sew the 1” gap together, sewing right below the stitch line for the zipper. Stopping right after the 1" marking.
Press flat, using a warm iron, or by finger pressing flat. The zipper should be mostly hidden by the fabric.
12. Sew the pillow sides together.
With Right sides together. Line up the edges of the pillow front and back. Pin edges.
Leave the zipper UNZIPPED so you can flip the pillow inside out after sewing.
Sew each edge of the pillow.
If hand sewn: using back stitches
If Machine sewn: Recommend 2-2.5 stitch length. Back stitching at the beginning and end.
Flip right side out. Press edges flat.
Add your pillow insert and enjoy having made your Cozy Cushion Kit.
